CATCH (Child and Adolescent Trail for Cardiovascular Health)

AKT has received a grant from Paso del Norte Health Foundation in El Paso in the amount of $33,000. The money is to be used in support of a cardiovasular health program being emplemented in the El Paso schools. The program goes by the name of CATCH which stands for Child and Adolescent Trial for Cardiovascular Health. The program consists of a physical education curriculum, a nutrition program, and a classroom curriculum. The Paso del Norte Health Foundation is supporting a CATCH coordinator that will work out of the Education Service center and will organize the CATCH activities across the various school districts. AKT will supply money for carrying out the training in physical activities, nutrition, and classroom curriculum. It is intended that within 5 years AKT will raise grants to continue the funding for both the coordinator and the expenses of maintaining the program.

At present there are 38 schools in 8 school districts that are using the CATCH program. The YWCA has also expressed interest. AKT is proud to be involved in this very worthy effort. For more information contact CATCH Coordinator, Mr. Klaus Hille.
